Plenković, Vojnić talk future of Croats in Serbia

ZAGREB, 10 April (Hina) - The president of the Croatian National Council (HNV) in Serbia, Jasna Vojnić, met in Zagreb with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to discuss current issues and challenges facing the Croatian community in Serbia, the Vojvodina-based publication Hrvatska riječ reported on Friday.

The meeting confirmed full support for the work of the HNV, with an emphasis on continued political and institutional cooperation.

“I thank Prime Minister Plenković for his support and open dialogue. His trust gives us additional strength to continue strengthening the position and rights of our community in Serbia and to pursue future projects of importance to our community,” Vojnić said.

The meeting comes amid the Croatian government’s ongoing engagement with Croats living outside Croatia, but also in what Vojvodina Croatian media have described as a sensitive political moment ahead of upcoming elections for the HNV, the central representative body of the Croatian minority in Serbia.

The elections carry significant political weight as they determine the direction of institutional representation of Croats in Serbia, including issues of education, official language use, culture and public information.

In recent years, Croatia has invested significant resources in strengthening both the staffing and infrastructure of the Croatian community in Serbia.
