The ceremony was held at the intersection of Croatia Street (Calle Croacia) and Fournier Street and was attended by members of the local Croatian community and their descendants.
The initiative to name the street after Croatia was launched in 1996 by the Kokotović-Romeo family in recognition of Croatian immigrants who helped shape the city. On Saturday, descendants of the family received official recognition, and a commemorative plaque was unveiled in their honour.
Another ceramic plaque by local artist Sonja Vitulić, herself of Croatian descent, bears the inscription: “The Croats of Patagonia honour the Kokotović-Romeo family for preserving the memory of our ancestral homeland.”
The ceremony also featured greetings in Croatian by Miguel Ángel Zuvela, president of the Croatian Association in Santa Fe, while members of the Kokotović-Romeo family received a certificate of appreciation from the Croatian Embassy in Buenos Aires for promoting Croatian culture and traditions in the region.
Croatian immigrants began arriving in Patagonia more than a century ago, where they settled and established communities that continue to preserve their heritage.
