Folklore groups performed in several cities while Croatian communities gathered at their social clubs, with organisers stressing the importance of passing on Croatian heritage and traditions to younger generations.
In Tucumán, celebrations at the Institute of the Republic of Croatia brought together Honorary Consul Catalina Lonac, local officials and members of the Croatian community. Students performed traditional dances, marched with Croatian flags and presented an overview of Croatia’s history since independence, while speakers highlighted the contribution of Croatian immigrants to the province’s development.
In San Salvador de Jujuy, the ceremony included the raising of the Argentine and Croatian flags and the planting of a jacaranda tree as a symbol of the Croatian community’s roots and heritage. Organisers also presented the ‘Ruta Verde’ environmental initiative, aimed at linking biological corridors through the planting of native species across the continent.
In Bariloche, Croatian and Slovenian communities jointly marked the anniversaries of Croatia’s and Slovenia’s independence, highlighting the historic ties between the two nations and their contribution to the city’s cultural diversity.
Despite different programmes, all events shared the goal of preserving the memory of Croatia’s declaration of independence from Yugoslavia on 25 June 1991, and passing its significance on to younger generations of the Croatian diaspora.
Around 300,000 Croats and their descendants live in Argentina, making it home to South America’s largest Croatian diaspora.
