Feast Day of St Blaise celebrated in Dubrovnik

ZAGREB, 3 Feb (Hina) - With a solemn Mass held in front of Dubrovnik Cathedral, the citizens of Dubrovnik on Tuesday celebrated the Feast of St Blaise, the city's patron saint, accompanied by the traditional procession through the streets of the historic city centre, carrying the relics of St Blaise and ceremonial banners.

The Mass in front of the cathedral was led by the Bishop of Hvar, Ranko Vidović. At the Mass, marking the 1,054th celebration of the Feast of St Blaise, this year's festanjuli -- sea captain Maro Čoić and craftsman Niko Prokurica -- took part dressed in traditional ceremonial attire.

Among those attending the celebrations were Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković; the Prime Minister's envoy, Minister Branko Bačić and other state officials as well as a large number of pilgrims.

The Feast officially opened on Monday afternoon with the traditional release of doves and the raising of the banner in front of the Church of St Blaise. It will conclude on Sunday, 8 February, with a procession and Mass at Gorica of St Blaise, followed by the lowering of the banner in front of the Parish Church and a final Mass.

The Feast of St Blaise was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
