The theatre group was formed last month by the Hrvatski Dom (Croatian Home) association, which brings together local Croats and their descendants. Tia Manda is their first performance staged in the Uruguayan capital.
The comedy centres on a conservative, devoutly Catholic family whose daughter falls in love with a Uruguayan young man whose mother is anticlerical and a communist, creating a series of comic situations. Antonich said the story is not tragic like Romeo and Juliet, but did not reveal the ending.
The play will be performed multiple times this year and is scheduled for a performance in Córdoba, Argentina, in November at the 9th South American Croatian diaspora gathering.
Antonich, Croatia's honorary consul in Uruguay and author of the book Croatia and Croats in Uruquay, also appears in the production, alongside members of the Croatian Home.
Uruguay is home to around 5,000 people of Croatian descent. Dalmatians began settling there in the 19th century, driven by poverty, vine disease and a shipbuilding crisis. Migration continued from 1924 to 1936, when the Croatian Home was established in Montevideo.
