Kovtun European parallel bars champion

ZAGREB, 22 Aug (Hina) - Croatian athlete Illia Kovtun on Saturday won European gold on the parallel bars at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb, scoring 14.700 in the final.

Kovtun, who won the all-around title on Wednesday, confirmed his status as favourite on the apparatus, having also posted the highest qualifying score.

He improved his routine in the final, earning a difficulty score of 5.8 and 8.8 for execution, plus a 0.1 bonus for his stuck dismount.

The 23-year-old claimed his third European parallel bars title, following victories in Antalya in 2023 and Rimini in 2024, when he represented Ukraine. He also has European silver from Munich 2022 and Olympic silver from Paris.

Turkey’s Ferhat Arıcan, 33, took silver on 14.433, while Britain’s Joe Fraser, 27, won bronze with 14.300. Arıcan is a two-time European champion on the apparatus, while Fraser won the world title in Stuttgart in 2019 and the European title in Munich in 2022.
