The fans had already got into the spirit of the occasion at the Croatian House, where the programme began at 1 p.m. local time.
The Croatian House was located at the Toronto Event Centre, around 200 metres from the stadium, and by early afternoon the area around BMO Field was awash with Croatia’s distinctive red-and-white chequered shirts.
Croatian supporters had travelled from all over the world, with the largest numbers coming from Toronto and the surrounding area, as well as nearby American cities. Many arrived without tickets, hoping to find a way into the stadium at the last minute.
Two hours before kick-off, the fans unfurled a giant 100-metre-long flag, continuing its journey across North America, from New York to Dallas and now Toronto.
Panama's supporters also held a fan march. Their procession made its way from Trinity Bellwoods to Coronation Park, adjacent to BMO Field.
Due to the two fan marches, the Canadian police closed several roads in the area, resulting in traffic congestion and delays.
