Hosted in the former Beban family house – now a cultural centre – the exhibition showcases photographs and artefacts illustrating the contribution of Croats to life in Tierra del Fuego, where they worked as gold prospectors, railway builders, merchants and sailors.
The exhibition, organised by the local Croatian association, aims to revive collective memory and highlight the cultural and social impact of Croatian immigrants. Today, around 200 descendants live in Ushuaia itself, and about 400 in the wider region, while Argentina as a whole is home to an estimated 300,000 people of Croat descent.
The historic Casa Beban, a listed cultural monument, was built for the family of Tomás Beban, son of a Croatian immigrant, using prefabricated materials shipped from Sweden in the early 20th century. After serving as a family home, clinic and hotel, it was later restored and relocated as part of a heritage preservation project.
