The documentary presents testimonies, historical facts and depictions of the locations where the Franciscans were killed by members of the Yugoslav communist regime, according to a statement issued by the Vice-Postulation for the martyrdom cause of fra Leo Petrović, and 65 of his fellow Franciscan friars.
Particular attention is given to the crime committed in Široki Brijeg in February 1945, when Partisans killed twelve Franciscans without trial after finding them in the monastery, before burning their bodies.
The film received the award in the documentary category. It was directed by Nikola Knez and produced by the Croatian Film Institute from Texas.
WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival is regarded as one of the world’s oldest independent film festivals and served as a launching pad for numerous filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg. The latest edition took place in Huston from 24 April to 3 May.
