"This significant donation came as a last-minute lifeline and has secured a meeting space for children, foster families and biological parents throughout the whole of 2026," the Croatian Heritage Foundation reported.
The organisation acted as an intermediary in awarding the donation.
The DamDom association was founded in Rijeka in 2010 with the aim of promoting foster care and informing the public about fostering.
It later expanded its activities to include adoptive families and brings together foster and adoptive families from across the county.
The association had been facing the loss of its premises due to an inability to pay the rent.
A representative of a group of expats from New York presented the donation at the association’s premises last month.
"This humanitarian act by our emigrants moved everyone to tears," the Croatian Heritage Foundation said, without disclosing the amount of the donation, as the donors wish to remain anonymous.
Around 1.2 million people of Croatian origin live in the United States, according to data from the Central State Office for Croats Abroad. It is the country with the largest Croatian diaspora in the world.
