Croatian central bank issuing silver coin dedicated to black lizard

Autor: Marija Šestan

ZAGREB, 14 Jan (Hina) - The Croatian National Bank is issuing a new silver coin with a denomination of 6 euro, dedicated to the black lizard and minted in brilliant uncirculated condition and ultra high relief, the HNB says.

"The motif of this collector coin represents an endemic subspecies of the Brusnik karst lizard (Podarcis melisellensis melisellensis), an important part of the natural heritage of the Republic of Croatia, living on a small island of Brusnik, which has been protected as a geological natural monument since 1951. The author of the design of this silver coin is sculptor Nikola Vudrag," says the central bank.

The silver coin "Black Lizard" is issued in a maximum quantity of 400 pieces and will be available for purchase from 21 January 2025 from the Croatian Mint at the expected initial sales price of €253.79, VAT included. The sales price at the time of purchase will depend on the price of silver on the open market.

The Dalmatian wall lizard is a species of lizard of the family Lacertidae.

It is found in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, and Slovenia.

Its natural habitats are temperate forests, Mediterranean-type shrubby vegetation, rocky areas, and pastureland.

Dalmatian wall lizards grow up to 65 mm (2.6 in) in snout-vent length. The tail is about twice as long as the body. Female lizards lay 2-8 eggs. Juveniles are about 25 mm (0.98 in) in snout-vent length upon hatching.
